A few facts for you to consider:
· There are over 36 million hungry people in the United States of America
· This nation allows 96 billion pounds of produce to rot in the growing fields every year. (That represents about 20% of what is grown…)
· About 1/3 of the hungry in this country are children. This is about 20% of all children in this country
· Every day, more than 2 million senior citizens of this country must make the decision- “…do I buy my needed medications, or do I eat today…”
· According to UNICEF, it would take 28 billion dollars a year to end malnutrition, immunization, and end illiteracy in the world. That sounds like a lot of money! But consider the following that Americans spend on other items:
o Legal Gamling- $550 billion
o Fast Food- $103 billion
o Soft Drinks- $60 billion
o Beer- $45 billion
o Diet Products- $33 billion
· Additionally, Illinois is ranked 2nd in the nation in farm cash receipts. Illinois is home to 1, 400 food companies and 76, 000 farms. Illinois produces enough corn each year to fill a train of box cars that would stretch from Downer’s Grove to Hong Kong (7, 960 miles).
