thing. We are finished with apples for the year. We had a good year
gleaning at Royal Oak Orchard and they had a good year selling!
First time in 9 years that the orchard was bare at this time of year!
On
Saturday, November 6, 2010 will be the final distribution of Winter Squash at
"The Farm", 34 east 63rd Street, Westmont, IL 60559. Start time
is 9:00 A.M. Bring your own containers to haul the squash
in. Last year we gave away over 70,000 pounds of squash!
On Saturday, November 13th we
will have a mixed load of boxed goods to give away. A semi load of
appromiately 40,000 pounds. Place : Helmar Lutheran Church, 11935 Lisbon
Road, Newark, IL 60541-9135. Time : 9:00 A.M.

I continue to get offers for
pie pumpkins after the first of November each year, but there just is not
enough demand for pumpkins to cook with. Most people only use them
for decorations. If you are seriously interested in going to the fields
in November and picking a semi load worth of pumpkins. I can put you in touch
with a couple of farmers. From experience, it just is not worth the time
for me.
I will follow up with the
Oct. report in about ten days or so. But we are well on out way to being
over 2 Millions pounds for the third straight year! Also a student from
Loyolta University did film a documentry on our gleaning ministry for her class
on food waste and ways to prevent it. I hope to get a copy when she is
finished editing it.
